Titanfall takes aim at the cloud: ‘We’ve really let the designers go crazy’
Among the areas of improvement in Titanfall 2 is its matchmaking, which should now be faster, make better matches, and generally be easier to understand. That’s according to a blog post and video above by Respawn server engineer Mike Kalas, who laid out the various problems with Titanfall’s matchmaking before explaining what’s been changed. These issues cropped up in a number of ways. Players’ skill ratings were updated match-to-match, but this was largely based on wins or losses and couldn’t dictate what games they ended up in without that player backing out of a match.
The game also did a poor job of communicating what matchmaking was doing, making it look like you’ll be in an unbalanced match causing some players to back out during the process, creating more problems. Servers couldn’t be merged properly as players left.

Now that the first Titanfall 2 beta weekend is behind us, developer Respawn has outlined how it has helped the game so far. In a blog post , lead engineer Jon Shiring said that the build in the technical test dates back to June, and many of the issues players reported have been fixed in the game for a while. Dedicated servers and capacity issues were among the top features the technical test helped with. Because the studio now relies on many servers across the world, it needed to know how fast players get into and out of matches to be able to optimise the number of servers available at any given time.
Matchmaking and backened systems, internally codenamed Stryder is one other aspect that needed testing. Shiring reveals that the studio was able to reliably create about 24, matches every two seconds. Improving this, as well as reducing instances of matches not being full on startup, has been a goal for team. The Invite Network feature, which you may noticed was acting up at times, was being worked on in real-time.

Ubisoft released a For Honor closed beta over the weekend and I spent some time with it trying out the different modes to see how it is shaping up. I am unsure about For Honor. I managed to get an access code for Xbox One so I am interested to see if my experiences differ from colleagues who have played on different platforms. The beta had three modes available: 1 v 1 duel, 2 v 2 brawl, and a 4 v 4 Dominion mode.

With the release of the Xbox One, Microsoft has tied up its next-gen home console with its new Azure cloud computing platform — a global swath of high-performing servers that are designed to provide increased stability, quick matchmaking and reduction in lag. Starting up the game, or rather loading the map itself, takes quite a bit of time. In any case, once the map loads in around 15 to 25 seconds I started to get a feel of the game outside of the tutorial. Still, when auto-targeting people from the smart gun to shooting the bullets, I never felt lag of any sort. Shooting from a Titan is a different story, though. For the regular machine gun things were fine, but the 40mm cannon and the rocket launchers felt that they were missing their marks, specifically for enemy units that are far away.

While the launch may not have been completely spotless , it has shown considerable improvement post-launch. Following this trend, Respawn Entertainment is poised to address one of fans’ biggest complaints with the game with the implementation of an improved matchmaking system. On an overt level, players are able to see the paltry or impressive experience levels of both their opponents and their own team.
Often though, this is not the best method of judging skill, with time invested sometimes having a much larger impact on a player’s level. This is where the game’s hidden skill levels come into play. As such, it is not the experience level of a player that is used in the matchmaking algorithm, but rather the skill level.
